Way Back Then, Singapore

A Spring/Summer 2023 Womenswear Collection inspired by the 60s and 70s traditional childhood games of Singapore.

The collection is about seeing the beauty of frugality through memories, and evoking feelings of nostalgia in the process.

It started with being intrigued by the childhood stories that my parents used to share.

Back in the era where Singapore was facing economic recessions and technology was not fully introduced, the children had to find other means of entertainment whilst ensuring that it was within their means.

Similarly, with the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, our economy has since faced massive disruptions and with the continuous depletion of our consumable resources. The people back then were able to live, but with a simple frugal lifestyle as compared to now, and the children then also made use of household materials such as used tin cans, fabrics, rubber bands and many more to form or create the various childhood games.

Mainly inspired by the childhood games of Singapore, the collection is about seeing the beauty of frugality through the memories and evoking feelings of nostalgia in the process. Being frugal and sustainable doesn't mean that designs would end up looking dull and boring. By using silhouettes, prints and bright colours, the collections hopes to provide a different view to the consumers on such garments.

Colour

Researched colour trends on WGSN S/S23 Women's Colour Forecast and narrowed down to two colour trends which I felt were related to my theme.

They were, "Warm Midcentury" and "Domestic Neutrals".

I was mostly inspired by "Warm Midcentury" when I was selecting the colours from my decks as, the colour trend looked bright and fun and also provided a nostalgic feeling which is a similar feeling to what I would like to evoke.

The vibrant colours of the trend also blend wells with each other.

Fabric

Fabrics selected were mainly variations/blends of cotton, like Japanese Cotton, Cotton Double Gauze and Polycotton.

Georgette, Chiffon and Polyester were also used to provide a soft and airy feel to the ribbon-like designs.
